Bituminous coal is treated as a uniaxial negative material by using an oblate spheroid shaped reflectance indicatrix model as shown in Figure 1A. To test this model, two polished pellets cut from the surfaces perpendicular to the bedding plane and to each other (along strike and dip directions if possible) were prepared individually as shown in Figure 2 .
