If you have only 1/4inch of gravel in your aquarium, you can just stir it with your net each day to help particles in the gravel get into the filter.. If you have more than 1/4quot; of gravel, you should not stir the gravel. Instead wash the gravel with a Gravel Washer.
Gravel, dead coral, shells, etc. alone will NOT keep the alkalinity, calcium, and pH up where you need to keep them. I have never had a nitrate problem in my saltwater tanks but did have phosphate so I use phosphate remover. Phosphate is in my well water so I make RO water as a base for water changes.
