#0183;#32;The mining industrys aspirations towards a catchmentbased water management approach have similarities with the concept of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) which has been committed to by many governments around the world. However IWRM has proved challenging to implement in practice.
The ICMM''s case study report, featuring eight other examples of water management in mining, highlights the industry''s acknowledgement that there is a problem with water resources, that mines need to become more sustainable and essentially become ''water stewards'', not only for the greater good but because it does, and will continue to, directly and negatively affect business.
The two biggest areas of water management concerns for mines are the challenges of avoiding discharges of contaminated water, and water scarcity in dry areas. Mines cannot ignore these challenges. In the one case, a lack of water availability could prevent new projects from being implemented.
